Stormy geomorphology: geomorphic contributions in an age of extremes

What role can geomorphology play in the management of landscape and human impacts of extreme events?
An international scientific meeting will take place in London on 11 May 2015 to answer this question. World leading researchers will present different perspectives on how geomorphology science can help better predict, measure and manage the effects of extreme events.
Especially addressed to catchment and flood risk managers, coastal erosion specialists, habitat creation experts and strategic planners, the programme will focus on five themes:

  • Putting extremes into historical context: the role of geomorphological and sedimentary archives
  • Magnitude and frequency of extremes in relation to recovery, resilience and prediction
  • Water, sediment and the effects of catchment organisation on flood risk
  • The role of current process geomorphology in measuring and monitoring the geomorphic aspects of extremes
  • Geomorphic solutions to buffer the effects of extremes
