When confronted with increasing risks and vulnerabilities caused by natural hazards and amplified by rising population and infrastructures in urban areas, the importance of resilience becomes more and more evident. Applying both to the structures that humans build and to the way society perceives and reacts to disasters, the notion of resilience has been widely adopted, but never univocally defined.
To fill this gap, the International Conference on Building Resilience aims to explore the concept of resilience as a useful framework of analysis for how society can cope with the threat of natural and human induced hazards.
